Feels like spring this week so I took a moment to relax with a good friend, Eddie Barnes. Good luck on your trip southwest in a few weeks sir. Lots of people are leaving this winter I'm going to miss. But really, who would pass up another spring in Athens?

Embracing the cold during my 4th winter enrolled in university... Weather forecast was brutal this weekend, but had a nice visit with my older brother Aaron who caught a chance to visit. Relishing the opportunities to explore in the fading time left.

Last fall quarter was a whirlwind of assignments. Finished strong and made pictures I was proud of. And the others... well I've got time to shoot them better and push a few of the stories I was working on. Here is a recap of my 2011, a year in pictures if you will. East Austin

Had a cool assignment this morning...

Met Joe Garcia today who works at a tire shop in East Austin. Small businesses like this one took a huge hit because of a large construction project on E 7th Street. With impatient customers avoiding the area, sales dropped for months forcing most businesses to lay off employees and some to close their doors for good. Joe was optimistic for future though, saying "it's always darkest when the sun is going to come out, you know?"

Last Shuttle Launch - "Well boys I reckon this is it"

"Cuatro"Kowalski, owner of the bar and grill Cuatros Austin turned the sound down on the usual sports broadcast to watch the launch for the final space shuttle mission Friday morning at 10:29am July 8, 2011. Space shuttle Atlantis will be the last of its kind before subsequent space missions turn to commercial companies.

Interning at KUT radio this summer in Austin and ran out this morning to grab a shot of people watching this historic moment for a possible blog post. I got my morning exercise trying to track down places on the University of Texas campus (where KUT is located) where it might be playing and finally found this bar - a minute to spare - after poking my head into venue after venue watching nothing but sports and cartoons.

A quote from one of my favorite movies Dr. Strangelove seems appropriate here. The movie shows General Jack D. Ripper who is so passionately afraid of the Russians - and protecting his "precious bodily fluids" - that he takes his own life rather than be captured. Soon we'll be "hitchin rides with the Russians" quotes an NYTimes article with Steven Dick, a retired NASA historian "to go to the space station that is mainly ours." Awkward...

Look3 - Festival of the Photograph - Charlottesville, VA

Right after finals a few friends and I took a drive down to Charlottesville, Virginia for a photo conference for an opportunity to get closer to professionals and peers. Didn't get much sleep, but had an awesome time I wouldn't take back. Shook hands with Christopher Anderson, peed in the stall next to William Albert Allard, and got to see some pretty crazy work in galleries and speaker presentations. A lot of passionate people. Sometimes getting to know someone you admire can burst your bubble in a way, but always serves to be a learning experience. Personally I found reassurance, and inspiration there and took down lots of thoughts and ideas in my moleskine notebook. Now I've got a summer to put them to the test.

I went back to the homeland June 4 to celebrate my brother getting married in wonderfully hot Texas, and had a pretty spectacular time away from the stress of school only focusing on having fun with friends and family. My brother Aaron and his wife Kate are great people and have some quality friends to make the journey from their respective parts of the country to celebrate. This came at a particularly stressful time in my life gearing up for final exams the day I would return to Ohio, but don't regret taking the time off. Wouldn't have missed this. (Pictures of the bride and groom are coming soon)

A day at the bridge

A few friends on the last day of finals showed me a nice hidden spot off the highway to relax, release, and exhilarate. I'll be frequenting that bridge next year quite a bit, sadly without the company of some quality seniors leaving us for the "real world" and all of its own little adventures.

Doug Curtis is quickly losing his vision in both his eyes so with few job opportunities available, he sold his boat and his car and opened a bookstore with his wife near their home in Nelsonville, Ohio. Curtis remains optimistic despite his new handicap and difficulty running a store visually impaired; some customers have even started exploiting him by stealing merchandise. "I don't call it a disability, I just call it different," Curtis said.

Summer at the Scotland Field School

Lobstermen Eric Gray, 55, Gordan Easingwood, 62, and younger brother Douglas, 55, catch lobsters off the coast of Dunbar, Scotland. Gordan, the captain of the boat has been lobstering since 1963. After his knee surgery last year, Gordan can't work on the deck as much and finds the idleness of driving the boat painfully boring.


Graham Scott, 47, works as a street performer in Edinburgh, Scotland. Known as "Silver," he performs once a day during the Fringe Festival every summer "mucking around with people" and previously miming on street corners covered in silver paint. Scott has had a stutter "since [he] could remember," but does not refrain from putting himself in front large audiences. Scott also works night shifts as a social worker, helping those on the streets. Scott would not reveal how much he earns on a good day at the Fringe, as he explains "they aren't all good days," and "sometimes you get rained out and don't make any money that day."

Independent Study Quarter

I recently took some portraits of an art professor at Ohio University, Aethelred Eldridge, 80, of Athens, OH who has been teaching for over 50 years and is sort of a local legend around town. Everyone’s heard of this guy. He sewed upside-down arrows to every pair of pants he wears (rumor has it he doesn’t believe in gravity). The mural pictured was painted by him (if it wasn't clear). I would love to eventually do a respectful photo story on the guy if he’d let me.

Look3 – Festival of the Photograph

Walking amongst famous photographers like Eugene Richards, James Nachtwey, Sylvia Plachy, and other emerging photographers is pretty darn inspiring. Last weekend I attended the annual Look3 Festival of the Photograph in Charlottesville, VA. Lots of images, cameras, and shooters in a relatively small city. I keep one of those "Moleskine" pocket sized notebooks around with me wherever I go to jot down any photographic, artistic, or any other miscellaneous inspiration I hear or see. I'll share some of the highlights of what I got out of this festival if you'd like to read:

• Sylvia Plachy – "I lost my language, but I gained my vision." Referring to her escape from Hungary to live in Austria; while not speaking the language she observed mostly through sight.

• Phillip Toledano – "If people believe in the integrity of your projects then they really will go along way to help."

• Gilles Peress – "I photograph to understand the world."

• James Roh – "That's just one of those times you risk it for a biscuit." In response to a World Press Photograph showing a ring of tear gas.

Neglected Newspapers

I came across a few newspapers outside my dorm a few nights ago that had been left there for a few days and soaked up that day's heavy rain. It caught my eye and made me think about the whole state of print media and newspapers in general. Just last year my plans for after college were to get a paid internship at a local newspaper, eventually joining staff, moving to a bigger paper, and branch off from there. Now with the state of the industry there's been a change of plans. Business models are changing. In the meantime, staffs are shrinking, papers are going bankrupt, and few know what's going to happen down the road. Anyways, the site of these soggy newspapers sitting untouched outside a college dormitory struck a chord inside me. This is where I once thought I had job security. Nowadays photojournalists are going to have to work harder than ever to be the most creative and the most versatile in order to find jobs. On a brighter note, I find comfort in the fact that Ohio University grads are high on a lot of employer's lists. And even though I'm anxious about the future, I love what I do. It's amazingly challenging but I couldn't imagine myself doing anything else.

Palmer Fest

"Palmer Fest" got a little out of hand this year. Like many other photographers I was harassed by police officers, some saying "if you want to keep your camera, you had better get your ass home."
